The SMART Living Handbook provides strategic information and practical tips for Waste Management, Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation and protection of our local Biodiversity. It was compiled by SEA and Amathemba in partnership with the City of Cape Town in 2005 and has been used very successfully for training and awareness-raising around sustainability issues.
The concept for the roll out of the SMART Living Handbook has been to “start at home”. As an example, the municipality first handed out handbooks to city staff and encouraged them to implement the practices at their homes. This was also linked to an internal training program for municipal staff members.
Taking this further, the City sponsored the Smart Living Corporate Campaign in 2008 to provide Cape Town based companies with the opportunity for training and distribution of the handbook. The “start at home” concept was again the focus with participating staff receiving training and a handbook showing what they can do in their homes to save money and reduce their environmental impact. This is then translated to the workplace through linking the principles of sustainable living to the company’s environmental strategy.
The training is adapted to the needs of the companies participating, ranging from training of all staff in monthly sessions or quarterly themes through to specialised training for selected staff or green teams to support their internal sustainability programs. From floor staff in factories through to senior managers, the message of smart living applies to all of us at home and in the workplace.
