This course will show you the why, what and how of auditing for environmental Sustainability.

Why do a Sustainability Audit?

Auditing is a critical part of any journey to sustainability.  Conducting an environmental audit provides three core elements for a site or facility:

  • Baselines or Benchmarks - Measurements and / or assessments that enable natural resource use to be compared against sustainability standards and regulations.
  • Evaluation of Governance – Assessment of how the site or facility is directed and managed according to sustainability principles.
  • Leadership Intervention – Opportunity for a site’s directors, managers or operators to implement best practice sustainability governance and interventions.

This 2-day training workshop will provide you with the principles, process and practice for conducting a Sustainability Audit. The course is presented using case studies and experiential learning methods that encourage you to actively participate and best gain the practical skills required to audit a variety of sites from homes, complexes, and office buildings, to restaurants, hotels, factories, and whole estates.
Through participating in the course you will receive a workbook and DVD with resource material, and learn:

  • Increased business efficiency – understand the importance, purpose and requirements of Sustainability Auditing
  • Practical skills – know how to prepare and conduct a Sustainability Audit
  • Integrated reporting – effectively communicate, report and disclose processes for Sustainability Auditing
  • Green Economy planning – develop a retrofit plan and recommend sustainability interventions

What is the course content?

Course material has been developed using the integrated reporting framework provided by the benchmark Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the recommendations of King III corporate governance in South Africa, and the significant experience of icologie gained from conducting many Environmental Audits at sites and facilities across South Africa.

The course is presented over 2 days with theory and practical including:

  • Core principles, methodologies and types of Environmental Auditing
  • Governance and reporting, and standards and certification
Section 2 – Conducting
  • Step-by-step planning and preparing for an Environmental Audit
  • Developing audit indicators and collating data
  • Compiling quality transparent audit reports
Section 3 – Evaluating
  • Report recommendations and retrofit planning
  • Costing sustainability interventions
  • Auditing review processes and follow-up strategy
