Accelerate Cape Town CEO Guy Lundy said they and sponsor company KPMG launched these quarterly Sustainability Forums two years ago, having found that the leaders and sustainability managers of large companies in the region often felt isolated and out of touch with what their peers were doing to address common issues. A regional forum to connect business leaders with similar sustainability goals thereforeneeded to be established.
Speaking at the Forum Professor Wikus van Niekerk, Director of the University of Stellenbosch’s Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES), said South Africa had some of the world’s best solar energy resources, especially in the Northern and Western Cape and the Free State, good wind resources especially in the rural Eastern Cape and Karoo, and very good ocean energy resources in Cape Town. He believed Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects in South Africa is the most attractive renewable energy option for South Africa.
Also speaking at the Forum was Sarah Ward from the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management Department and Marvin Benjamin, City Account Manager at Siemens who shared the ways in which business and the City of Cape Town have the capacity to help.
