Thank you Jeremy. I am not sure about your statement "the home where most of the energy in South Africa is consumed". Domestic use is responsible for the evening peak, but taken over a year, industry uses far more electricity than homes. I was in Richard's Bay recently, and was told that each of the two smelters there use as much electricity as the entire Western Cape.

This is a deeply inspirational piece of editorial. To add some snippets. PV panels last very well. They are however a problem security wise as they get stolen. These are in serious demand. If everyone had one there would be no need to steal them. Development of energy on a very large scale for the home where most of the energy in South Africa is consumed would make a huge contribution to getting South Africa off the dependency of coal and its contribution to CO2 emissions. Medupi will be over subscribed by 300% by 2013 when its delayed comissioing is due. This will be thanks to aluminium smelters being commissioned but just as importantly by 10 thousand Nissan Leaf and perhaps 30 000 other electric cars on the market who's delayed introduction has gone unnoticed. These alone will exhaust Medupi. The other unnoticed proposed demand for energy will be desalination. In Johannesburg, for treatment of AMD, and in coastal cities for augmentation of water by desalination of sea water through reverse osmosis. Each kilolitre of desalinated water costs 7 kilowatt hours of energy Cape Town has no future augmentation of water from rivers. Have a lovely month of November.

Yes, any beach. The Two Oceans Aquarium is co-ordinating a clean-up in Muizenberg, but you can do your own thing. John Kieser is the national co-ordinator and I am happy to put you in contact with him if needed. G
